Working to end hunger in Minnesota.

Healthy Communities

Taking a bite out of hunger.

According to Second Harvest Heartland, more than 540,000 Minnesota residents struggle with hunger — including 1 of every 7 children. A hungry person is 3 times more likely to suffer health problems, and estimates are that Minnesota spends more than $1.6 billion annually on hunger-related costs — including health care, medication, education and lost productivity. Through our partnership with Second Harvest Heartland, UnitedHealthcare employees have helped reduce food insecurity in Minnesota. In fact, since 2011, UnitedHealth Group has invested more than $900,000 and provided 22,000 hours of volunteer support.

“UnitedHealthcare’s actions to reduce hunger are providing immediate support for people in our community, including children and seniors.” Rob Zeaske, CEO, Second Harvest Heartland

A fresh approach to food distribution.

In 2017, UnitedHealthcare partnered with Second Harvest Heartland to distribute nearly 500,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to our neighbors at more than 60 mobile pantry distributions in the Twin Cities. The fresh produce went to 32,759 individuals, including nearly 5,000 seniors and 12,350 children.

Helping seniors stay healthy.

Through a partnership with WCCO Television, UnitedHealthcare volunteers helped raise awareness about hunger among older Minnesotans. In 2016, 31 UnitedHealthcare employees helped answer 220 calls, forwarding 33 calls to Second Harvest Heartland to apply for hunger-relief programs.

“By addressing hunger in Minnesota, we’re able to help people live healthier lives and build stronger communities for the long term.” Jeff Putnam, CFO, UnitedHealthcare
