Consider mental health care coverage through an Individual and Family plan

Caring for one’s mental health — which includes emotional, psychological and social well-being — can often be an important part of maintaining physical health. If you or someone in your family is struggling, you’re not alone. One in five Americans experience a mental illness in a given year.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. However, a recent study shows more than half of those with high mental health risks do not seek treatment. Many report not knowing where to turn for help or are unsure of what kind of help they need.

For those looking for an Individual and Family plan on the Marketplace, you may be surprised to learn that mental health support is available.

With an Individual and Family plan, mental health and substance abuse services are covered as essential health benefits. This includes pre-existing mental and behavioral health conditions. Your specific health benefits may depend on your state and the health plan you choose but all plans must cover:

  • Behavioral health treatment, such as psychotherapy and counseling
  • Mental and behavioral health inpatient services
  • Substance use disorder (commonly known as substance abuse) treatment
  • Behavioral health assessments for adults or children

Getting support for your mental health does not have to be scary or anything to be ashamed about.

If you’re not sure which kind of insurance plan may be available to you, open enrollment between Nov. 1, 2021 and Jan. 15, 2022 is a great time to shop for a plan that fits your needs.
