Staying fit and active is about more than just physical health. Keeping mentally nimble is equally important – especially as we age.
In fact, the two go hand in hand. Studies have shown that moderate exercise can help improve brain function, especially in the areas responsible for learning and memory. Improving the way these parts of the brain work may fight pre-Alzheimer’s changes often seen in midlife.
Tony and Nancy Chiu are committed to taking advantage of these benefits. Married for more than 50 years, they want to be healthy and active during their retirement, which is why they start off their days in the gym with a walk on the treadmill and a half-hour ride on the stationary bike. “After going to the gym, I feel great,” said Nancy. “It gives me a lot of energy. I feel like a young kid!”
In addition to the energy boost they get from exercise, the Chius know that staying active can also:
- Improve balance, helping to reduce their likelihood of falls
- Prevent or delay the onset of conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease
- Elevate their moods and minimize the risk of depression
- Increase their strength and resilience, which can help them maintain independence as they age
To help achieve their fitness goals, the Chius take advantage of the fitness program available with their UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan. And they’re not the only ones singing its praises. Since introducing Optum Fitness Advantage in 2017, the response from people enrolled in its Medicare Advantage plans has been overwhelmingly positive.
For that reason, UnitedHealthcare will significantly expand the program in 2019 and will also introduce new features that will make it easier for people to get in both physical and mental workouts. The program will also have a new name in 2019: Renew Active. The rebranding aligns the program with Renew by UnitedHealthcare, the company’s members-only health and wellness experience that empowers people to take an active role in their health and happiness.
Renew Active™ is a fitness program for body and mind designed to help people live their best lives and achieve their health and wellness goals. Available with select Medicare Advantage plans in 23 states, the program offers access to an extensive choice of more than 7,000 fitness locations at no additional cost, including participating locations of 24 Hour Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Curves, Gold’s Gym, LA Fitness, Life Time and Snap Fitness. Locations also include local participating YMCAs.
Through Renew Active, people can take advantage of an in-person fitness orientation to help them get started toward reaching their goals as well as all the benefits of a standard membership at participating fitness locations, including a wide variety of equipment, amenities and classes.
New in 2019, Renew Active will also offer online exercises and activities designed to support cognitive health and help people keep their minds active. Engaging in challenging mental tasks can help protect against age-related functioning declines in memory and thinking.
