Bringing affordable housing to California

Construction should be completed in December for Sugar Pine Village, a new affordable housing community in Madera, California that will provide 52 high-quality, affordable apartment-style homes to the region. More than 30% of the new homes will be available for individuals and families struggling with housing insecurity and those experiencing homelessness.

UnitedHealth Group is the largest private investor of the $25 million development, providing $11.2 million in equity as part of an initiative to connect people in need to housing and support services to help them live healthier lives.

In a partnership with the Madera County Behavioral Health Department, residents will have access to wrap-around supportive services that include on-site management and counselors to assist residents with health, wellness and other socio-economic needs.  Residents will also have access to children’s after-school programs, fitness and Zumba classes, healthy cooking classes and computer training, among other educational resources.

“There is a strong connection between housing and health. If you don’t have a safe place to stay, it may be difficult to feel secure or manage your overall well-being,” said Kevin Kandalaft, CEO of the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of California. “UnitedHealthcare has invested more than $500 million in affordable housing, and this investment underscores our commitment to housing and support services to drive better health outcomes for our underserved California communities.”
